Remote Education

What is Remote Learning?

Remote learning provides an opportunity for children and teachers to remain connected and engaged with learning while working from home. It is typically used in response to emergency situations (such as school closures), allowing pupils to continue their education without significant disruption.

By maintaining a consistent learning experience at home, children are better prepared to transition back into the classroom without needing extensive catch-up or remediation.

Many of the expectations found in traditional classroom settings still apply to remote learning. The overall goal remains to provide high-quality education that meets the needs of all learners.

🕒 Minimum daily expectation for Key Stage 1:
An average of 3 hours per day, with fewer hours for younger children, as per government guidance.

Introduction

To ensure high standards of remote teaching and learning, our Executive Headteacher and Assistant Headteacher undertook online training delivered by the National College for School Leadership.

The training focused on equipping leaders with the knowledge and strategies to meet national standards and achieve positive outcomes for all children. A key distinction explored during training was between:

  • Synchronous learning – Real-time, interactive online teaching (e.g. live video lessons via Teams).

  • Asynchronous learning – Learning that takes place via pre-prepared resources without live teacher interaction (e.g. recorded lessons, worksheets).

Evidence-Informed Approach

In addition to formal training, our remote learning strategy is supported by guidance from the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF). Their research highlights five key principles:

  1. High-quality teaching is more important than the method of delivery.
This includes clear explanations, scaffolding, and feedback.

  2. Access to technology is essential, especially for disadvantaged pupils.
We provide support and guidance to help children, parents, and teachers use online platforms effectively.

  3. Peer interaction improves motivation and outcomes.
We encourage collaborative tasks like shared work, peer feedback, and online discussions.

  4. Developing children’s independent learning skills improves achievement.
We support reflection, goal setting, and the use of checklists or plans—particularly beneficial for disadvantaged learners.

  5. Different approaches suit different content and learners.
We use games, quizzes, videos, and creative tasks to match varied learning needs.

Planning for Remote Learning

To support pupils and parents during remote learning periods, we have implemented a structured, accessible plan. This includes a blend of synchronous and asynchronous learning to maintain engagement and maximise progress.

🗓 Weekly Timetables

A weekly timetable will be uploaded to the Remote Learning section of the school website under ‘My Child’s Learning’.

The timetable includes:

  • Daily registration via Microsoft Teams – to prepare for learning and outline expectations for the day.

  • 🎓 Oak National Academy live lessons – accompanied by follow-up work (e.g. story maps).

  • 📊 Learning reviews with teachers – to assess reading, writing or maths progress in 1:1 or small groups.

  • 🧁 Creative hands-on activities – such as making a bird feeder or baking.

  • 🌱 Personal development – including mindfulness, outdoor exercise, or emotional well-being activities.

  • 🌟 Curiosity-driven learning – fun, engaging and age-appropriate activities designed to spark interest.

Learning Platforms and Online Resources

Children can access all our learning platforms by clicking the "Learning at Home" button on the school website. These include:

  • Purple Mash – A creative online space used for communication and to inspire imaginative learning.

  • Mathletics – An engaging maths platform where children practise fluency, reasoning and problem-solving. Teachers can assign tasks, track progress, and celebrate achievement with certificates.

  • Oxford Owl – A digital library and phonics resource to support reading at home.

  • Discovery Education Espresso – Offers real-world content, interactive tools, and exciting multimedia learning experiences.
