Healthy Lunchboxes from Home

At Wrockwardine Wood Infant School and Nursery, we are committed to supporting children’s health and wellbeing. As part of this, we encourage parents to provide healthy, balanced packed lunches that meet national food and nutrition standards and can be safely stored and enjoyed in a positive dining environment.

We follow the School Food Standards (SFS) and EYFS Nutrition Guidance to ensure consistency and promote lifelong healthy habits.

⚠️ Please note: No food that contains nuts or nut products is allowed in your child’s packed lunch due to allergy risks.

What a Healthy Lunchbox Should Include:

A balanced packed lunch should contain the following:

  • Starchy food or carbohydrates – e.g. wholemeal bread, wraps, pasta, rice, couscous, potatoes.

  • Protein – e.g. chicken, tuna, hummus, lentils, beans, boiled eggs, cheese.

  • Vegetables – e.g. carrot sticks, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, cooked peas, peppers.

  • Fruit – e.g. sliced apples, bananas, halved grapes, melon, small portions of dried fruit.

  • Dairy or dairy alternatives – e.g. yoghurt, fromage frais, cheese sticks, or fortified plant-based alternatives.

  • A healthy drink – Water or milk, as per the EYFS requirements.

🚫 Foods to Avoid:

To maintain health and safety, we ask that the following not be included in your child’s lunchbox:

  • Chocolate bars, sweets, or confectionery

  • Fizzy or artificially sweetened drinks

  • Crisps or salty snacks (alternatives like plain rice cakes are fine)

  • Nut products of any kind

  • High-sugar cereals (e.g., chocolate-coated or sugar-frosted cereals)

  • Instant noodle, pasta or rice pots

  • Sweetened yoghurts or dessert-style fromage frais

  • Items that require refrigeration or reheating, in line with food safety guidance

Our Home–School Partnership

We believe that developing healthy habits is a team effort between school and home.

Please see our Healthy Lunchbox Home/Nursery–School Agreement which outlines what we encourage in a lunchbox and how we support this together.
